Estes X-15

The Estes X-15 model rocket is no longer for sale

Recalled after nearly killing a child at a large scout event.

Fine to collect, but keep a large note taped to it that it should NEVER be flown.

I'd balance it properly and fly the thing anyway.

Thanks, Shreadvector I have taken this rocket down. I knew about the recall but after reading it over again I decided I would not want to be responsible for another incidence.

I have modified all the X-15 I fly by using a BT-20 engine tube the length of the body of the X-15 to ensure the ejection gasses goes where it is supposed to go. I also use an engine hook to hold the engine in and have added a little more nose weight for stability. I have two that I fly and both fly fine. I'm not sure someone else would do the same to ensure safe flights if they had perched this rocket.

Once again thanks for speaking up.

I just read the link Fred posted. It talks about "engine retainer ring separating" from the rocket. So it's more than just a stability issue. That said, it's not hard to use a more conventional, metal retainer instead of the plastic ring.

I want to say that Don Magness at Squirrel Works got called to testify in this case. Maybe he'll read this and chime in. FWIW, as I recall, there were some mitigating issues such as safe distance violations or kids on the range not watching the launch.
