Thickness of Mars Snooper Fin Stock?
I want to build and blog the Estes Mars Snooper, Kit #K-20.
The instructions from JimZ's website say the fin stock is #BF-20A and BF-20B. Old Estes catalogs show the "20" designation as 1/16" thick balsa. The laser cut Mars Snooper fins are listed on the Semroc site as 3/32". Anybody know which thickness is correct? |

Both thicknesses are used. Thin stuff on the top fins, thick stuff on the bottom fins. |

Thanks Sandman, that makes sense! On the JimZ page, the bottom fins are on one sheet (the 3/32") the top fins and cooling vanes are on a second sheet. (the 1/16") |
Estes has had 5 fin stock thicknesses in the past; they were always the same thickness per part number, they did not change.
BFS-10x = 1/32 BFS-20x = 1/16 BFS-30x = 3/32 BFS-40x = 1/8 BFS-60x = 3/16 There never was a BFS-50x, but using the convention above, it would have been 5/32. Interestingly enough, the Mars Snooper II used ONLY BFS-20 fin stock for its die-cut fins, part number 32205. |
