Krylon clear over testors enamel???
 

Hi guys and gals...Quick question. Is there any problems with spraying Krylons clear over testors enamel?? Any feedback would be very much appreciated. :)

I know some folks have gotten away with this, I would avoid it. I generally don't put Krylong over either Testors or Rustoleum, but can put Rustoleum or Testors over Krylon. The new Krylon might be more forgiving...

In my case, it was just ugly--the Krylon crinkled up and blistered. Even after multiple efforts to sand it off and apply a covering coat of primer, I still had trouble.

I had a similar experience. Where ever there was FnF under the finish the paint lifted, even though there was a primer coat underneath. Where there was no FnF it looked fine. I'd get a can of Testors clear gloss or just use Future.

Try the new Krylon Acrylic Clear. I've had excellent results with it over a number of paint brands. I painted an Oulander with Testors flats, used the gloss clear to provide a good base for decals, and then used the matte clear to restore the flat finish. Worked very well. There are a number of formulas, but the latest I bought is marked UV Resistant.

Here's the Outlander. No visible edges of the decals, like you'd get normally if you applied them over flat paint.

I have not had any trouble with the older Krylon clears over Testors or Model Master paints, (lacquer or enamel) whatsoever, other than it is heavy compared to Future that is airbrushed. Also, it will 'eat' certain kinds of decals (ask me how I know ) :rolleyes: .
Always do sample tests to be sure for yourself, though! :D

Has anyone put future polish in a spray bottle and and applied it that way??? If so, any pointers would be great!! Thanks for the info on the clear compatibility by the way. :)

I painted it gloss white so i don't want to use testors gloss coat due to yellowing and i have never used future although i have heard many good things about it. I don't use an airbrush and i am a little concerned with the outcome brushing it on, which is why i asked the spray bottle question above .

Future flows nicely through an airbrush. Never tried it in a regular spray bottle, but it might work that way if you don't put it on too heavy... it tends to self-level if you don't make it too wet.

BUT... you need some ammonia or something else that cuts Future to clean anything you spray Future through. Otherwise it'll plug up your equipment.

The Krylon Clears are acrylics, and not to be confused with the older Krylon colors, that crinkled about everything except other Krylons.

Krylon sells these acrylic clears to preserve photos, seal inkjet prints, etc. They are meant to be used to topcoat a wide range of paints and I've yet to have any issues.

I hate the stuff over compatible decals. After you spray it over the decals and let it dry, you cut them out. Simple enough, eh? But when you soak the decal in water and it breaks free of its paper, little bits of dried Krylon get freed up also, and often find their nasty way UNDER the decals. I use the Testors Decal Bonder one would use when you print decals off an inkjet. I use it on all old and new decals. NEVER a problem so far for me :D .
