Two rocket sites?

While searching in Rocket History, I came across two terms about rocket sites I have never herd of before. I'm guessing it's a rocket site,IDK.

ROL and mrm

It's under this heading on page 5.

'Products which were announced but never released.'

Any ideas?

RMR, the Wild West of the internet! Cecil B. Demille would have been proud. Talk about a cast of thousands!

If you missed out on RMR, you missed a fun and exciting time on the internet.

I miss it.

Me, too.

It's kinda funny...when I stumbled onto in in early 2000 (IIRC), thanks to a link from ROL, folks were complaining then that it "wasn't what it used to be". But I surely enjoyed it for a few years.

Over time, it got less popular, but it was still interesting for many years.

That said, I do seem to recall two users who I credit with finishing it off. Seems they couldn't stop bickering, so lots of folks simply quit tuning in.

By then, other forums were going strong so much of the traffic migrated to them.

I found RMR at the same time I found the Old Rockets group at Yahoo, so while I spent some time at RMR, I spent a lot more at Old Rockets. RMR is responsible for my joining QUARK here in Cincinnati. I attempted to make contact with the person listed in the NAR literature, but never heard back from him, so I posted a question asking if the club was still active. The Beer Skunk answered after some prodding from one of the RMR regulars. I attended a launch at the Countryside YMCA in Lebanon and realized how much more fun it was to launch with other adults. Well, adults in age. As for ROL, I found myself unable to settle in there due to the posting style, which I'm sure had a lot to do with my newbness.

There were two big daggers in the heart of r.m.r. One was actually a double shot. On the front end, there was a lot of bickering and arguing. That led Darrel Mobley to create ROL. Many people left r.m.r. for it.

The other dagger was increased use of spambots. Each month that passed after the spambots came, you would have to sort through more and more spam posts. First 10:1, then 20:1, then 30:1 ratios of spam to humans...and worse. The human masses that hadn't left r.m.r. for ROL finally gave up and went to existing forums or started their own, including several Yahoo groups. I don't remember if Scott created the Old Rockets Yahoo Group due to the death r.m.r., but it did come along after its fall from grace. YORF is a child of Old Rockets Yahoo Group, btw.

The thing I like best about YORF vs. the others is the audience it attracts. Some newbies, yes, and fanboys of course, but also the upper echelon of the model rocket industry. Very helpful when something newsy happens.

It wasn't always that way. Deviants will find a way to fill any vacuum. I've been flying rockets for 37 years and have yet to meet anyone who shoves them up their butt. :chuckle:
