Enamel Crinkle
I just airbrushed a rocket with enamel but one of the fins came out crinkly for some reason. I dutifully wet sanded that spot smooth and shot the rocket again. Still crinkly in that same spot. What gives? Seems I've read about this somewhere but can't remember.
Thanks, Chris |
I just had the same problem with the crinkling in a few spots. Sanded and shot it again with the same result.
I then sanded all the original primer off the troubled spots, waited a couple of days and re-shot with primer on only those spots and had success. I'm thinking (always a problem) that certain areas (of paint) were thicker and didn't cure as well or quickly as other areas. I now wait at least a few days before I spray additonal coats. If I can still smell it—I wait until I can't. I don't know if this is part of the problem, but I've only had those troubles when I've mixed brands of paint and been impatient to spray. |

What brand of paint did you use? |

Heh - Me - 3. Same thing happened to me yesterday. Clearly a surface issue. Contamination or some issue with that spot, because it happened again in the same spot. I had to sand down to bare wood fin, re- prime, and then the color coat was Ok. Part of my issue (I think) relates to wanting to cover too quickly. I get better results with many thin coats, but I struggle with having the patients to do it right. |
Thanks guys. I'll try sanding that spot down further and re-prime and re-paint. I'm using Testors paints, by the way.

Just to close this out I sanded the area down quite a bit more this time (not quite to the balsa, though) and re-primed and re-painted with satisfactory results.
