Semroc Bandit

Bandit #00027 has been unpacked. I just want to admire those laser cut baffles for a bit before gluing it all together. I remember being impressed at the engineering of that system shown in the '74 catalog. I wonder what the paint scheme is from other angles?

I finished construction and fillets on my Bandit this past Saturday. What a nice clean design it is, even unpainted. I added a thrust ring and a kevlar line to the shock cord. As always with Semroc, an excellent kit, the only negative was that the fin set in mine had softer than usual balsa but that will be fine with a little finishing.

Looks interesting Paul! My first "Bandit" was a black and yellow E2X kit I got from my aunt somewhere in the mid-late 90s. Not quite the same cool factor, but a proud member of my original fleet. Look forward to seeing the original version fly at the sod farm sometime :)

Interesting lot of parts, you have my full attention. I've heard of this rocket, but really don't know anything about it. Are you planning to document the build?

Holy cow, it's been nearly 5 months since I've posted on this! :o It's been a busy summer, without much building (or flying). The build is complete, with only 3/4 coats of aerogloss on the fins/NC ;) . Now I'm contemplating color; the goal is this: http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/ca...74/74est38.html. I'll wing the roll pattern, since we don't know exactly what it looked like on the far side. One thing I'd like, though, is to get that darker yellow look. It's probably just lighting, since later catalogs appeared brighter, but this is the shade I remember, and would like to achieve. There's probably a Testors spray that'll do it, suggestions?

Valspar Tractor & Implement has two shades that are very close: Cub Cadet Yellow and Transport Yellow (similar to school bus yellow).

I used Transport Yellow on my upscale Goblin.

Rustoleum Painter's Touch marigold yellow #249862 is a very rich yellow gloss and is the color I shot this V2 with. I shot my Bandit with Rustoleum sun yellow wihich is a paler yellow, and this is how I patterned the fin can.

Hence:

Wonderful paint jobs.

I have Hawks Hobbies Bandit upscale which I'll likely tackle next year. I treated the cone and coupler with wood hardener this spring; they've been in a sunny windowsill for months, to allow the solvents to outgas.

Paul, wait till the 18th or the sod farm next month. That fellow that bought Gary's Hobby is going to be coming to the launches to unload all of the rocketry stuff - cheap. Have you noticed the emails? I'll ask him to bring paint, too - he said he has a ton.

After visiting the LHS, and much gnashing of teeth, I found a testors lacquer called "Inca Gold". Perfect - a rich yellow metallic; To my eyes at least, exactly like the '74 catalog. Being a metallic, it looks better in person. Decals from Excelsior complete the classic look.
