Astron Delta

Here is my Delta clone. I'm not sure I like the extent of decoration on this yet, it might require some more decals or something. Plus my Camroc isn't ready for flight yet, but I put it on top just for looks.

Because I have such a bent for stagers, I've thought about building just the Delta (sans Camroc).

Is that a real Camroc? Or just made up to look the part?

I could see me faking one. I could also see building a fake one then putting some sort of electronic camera in it, too.

The decal is a nice touch.

Did you consider setting the booster up for 24mm?

It's a real Camroc, I was reading tedsters thread here about his Camroc adventures and it got me excited to get my Delta finished and fly mine.

24mm engine? You can't. The instructions clearly say that you are to only use a B14-0 in the booster! I'm not one to disregard the manufacturer's recommendations so I plan to follow them :D

FWIW, here is a Camroc Carrier that I built a while back. I may try flying it on both.

I've thought for some time (like since 2004) of building an Astron Delta clone for launching
an Astrocam 110 payload. I've even printed the fin plans and have them somewhere. I've
always loved the way the Astron Delta looked with the Camroc on top. Nice work!

Nice job, looks great! I think the Delta is cool finished all black ..... makes the decal stand out really well.

I always wanted the Delta and the Camroc as a kid and never did manage to get one :(

The Astron Delta was the first two-stager I ever built.
Never had a Camroc, but flew that Delta a ton.
I still have it somewhere.

What did you fly on top? I've been thinking of some kind of appropriate payload section and/or nose cone for it.

As an aside, the fins on that thing (especially the upper stage) are huge! They go halfway up the body tube.

That's what I also noticed when I printed the fin patterns a while back. I was thinking, should I get around to building a clone, that I might make the upper stage body tube a bit
longer.

I used a clear payload section similar to the Astron Constellation on top for "normal" flying of my Astron Delta.
I also had a large "Farside X" type payload that got flown as well.
Apparently Estes thought they needed those huge fins with the large un-aerodynamic Camroc on top in order for it to fly decently.
This was obviously disproven with the very small elliptical fins found on the single-stage Astron Camroc Carrier, which looked as though it fell at least 50 feet out of the UGLY TREE, but flew well.
Those huge fins on the Astron Delta make it a NASTY weather-cocker in anything but very light winds.

I was planning on building and flying a clone of the Astron Delta exactly as it is shown here.

When I first saw this page in the 1967 catalog, I thought, "Cool! A two-staged rocket that flies without a nose cone!" :D

But then my friend said, "No, it has a nose cone all right - a cylindrical, flat-topped nose cone." :p
