It's a Cluster @&%! Sir ...

I recently completed two 3 engine cluster models I started back in the winter. Always loved launching the Cobra & Scrambler. Lots of smoke and noise !
I ran out of aerogloss sealer/filler and used a homebrew of Brodak dope mixed with talcum powder. Using 4 coats on all surfaces on both models and it would seem that my home brew filler worked a little better ( ref nose cone picts). I went old school on the Cobra and did the wading and glue thing to seal the cluster mount …what a mess ! I sealed the bottom with very thin coat of latex sealer just to clean it up a bit. The Taurus in the background is an original Centuri kit which survived in my parents basement and was assembled a few years ago. It recently suffered a "re-entry" issue and is in for repairs and new paint. Just added a pict of my Scout to give the full effect of the size ... |
Those came out looking just fine.
Two of the rare kits I never came close to building / cloning. |
Excellent paint jobs! What did you use?

Thanks !
I've been using a combination of Rustoleum primer and LustreKote and/or Brodak dope. Several light coats seem to do the trick. I let the primer dry for at least a week before applying the dope. Future ( Pledge ) is then applied after the decals have set up for a day or so. |
Nice clusters. On my to-build-someday list, with Semroc parts squirreled away...
|
Two of my all-time favorite Estes Kits, the Astron Scrambler and Astron Cobra. Both discontinued WAY too soon.
|
Brodak is an outfit I didn't know of - I haven't built a stick and tissue plane since the late 1980s. Their website is now bookmarked.
|
I cloned the Cobra a while back, pre-Semroc, even.
http://www.rocketreviews.com/estes-...chelberger.html I have the Semroc Scrambler ready for priming. Yours has me thinking about getting going on it when I'm on vacation later this week. |

Did you ever use that Ranger nose cone? I got one from BMS the other day; planning to do a Ranger this winter. |
Those look awesome! Nice work!
|
I agree with everyone else—a couple of nice rockets, well built and painted. I'm particularly partial to the Cobra. Classic, old-timey looks.
I have a BMS clone that I'll get around to one of these days. I also like the interesting scheme you have on the Taurus. |

Appreciate the compliments ..thank you ! I should have specified that the Cobra actually is a BMS clone. It's a great kit with quality parts. |
My Astron Cobra is a BMS clone.
I think my Astron Ranger was from Rocketpad or PDR...I know its not Semroc. |

Rocketpad sounds right on the Ranger. PDR sold more of the sci-fi types of kits. I won an original payload bay and nose cone in an Ebay auction and cloned the rest of the rocket using a set of Baby Bertha fins and some spare tubes. I flew it at NARAM last year. |
Very nicely done rockets but your workbench is way too neat!
