Identify this rocket
Does anyone know what rocket this is? Is it a scratchbuilt or....?
What about that launcher? Looks like someone's NAR number on the fin. http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-Very-Early...A1%7C240%3A1318 |
Just checked the NAR #'s in the ORR site from NARAM - 50's website; no one with that NAR
# listed. |
Centuri Micron with the fins attached wrong?
|
From the image angle you can't really tell but it appears that the engine hasn't been fired. I wonder what engine is installed and I assume it comes with the purchase .....

Scott,
Its a Centuri Micron with the fins glued on incorrectly ... to bad for if they weren't, I would bid on it. Bob |
Well, it looks like an Estes BT-30 or BT-40 vanilla colored parallel-wound tube. Did Centuri ever sell kits that employed those tubes? My guess is a home-built using Estes parts, and I suspect it's based on a BT-40. Also vaguely reminiscent of the upper stage of an Aries II (from the old Estes plan).

Joe, Nope its a Micron. Simply detach the fins and reattach along the other long edge ... presto its a Centuri Micron. The white you see inside the tube is the paint, and not the actual color of the tube; if it were a BT-30 or BT-40, the engine would not be so snug in the tube. Take a close look at the picture showing the motor... the motor is snug as a bug in a rug. Oh, notice the grain of the balsa also indicating the fins were attached incorrectly; the grain is running parallel with the tube... we know that isn't supposed to be :) Another dead give away is the engine being flush with the end of the body tube. The original 6" length body tube had you push the thrust ring all the way in with a dummy engine tube until the dummy tube was flush with the end... I know because I left mine in a little too long ... I think for my level 3 project I will build an upscale Micron for "M" Power in honor of my first born. Bob |

Looks like an Astron Mark (or with 4 fins, a Centuri Micron) with the fins glued on wrong. |
Bill and Lurker win the prize. Yes, it appears to be a Micron with the fins glued on wrong. It was offered as a starter kit with that launch pad.

Yes, Bob.................nice call. It must be a Micron, although it still really looks like a parallel-wound tube to me. The inside front of the tube looks somewhat ivory colored with a bit of overspray of the whiter paint in there too. In fact, the inside of the tube more closely matches the color of the yellowed decal pattern. Did Centuri use a parallel-wound tube for the kit? I should have noticed the tight fit of the engine.
Scott, were the mitre cuts on the Centuri launcher pieces really that poor, or did the guy just do a poor job in assembly? And was the launcher square or rectangular? In the Centuri catalog it looks rectangular, but that could be just the angle of the photograph. His definitely looks square. Joe |
