Does anyone know of any where to launch near the Palm Springs area that does not require a permit? I was launching down in San Diego, but that was just made tougher because of the FAA. I am unable to launch on the weekends because of my work schedule and Dart of San Diego had launches on Thursday. Mike, the president of DART is awesome and would schedule days for me to launch and he would provide the permit. But now that is more difficult, see the below link. S. California is terrible for supporting model rocketry. I am also thinking of every couple of months taking a trip to Las Vegas to fly somewhere around there. Once again I cannot fly on weekends so if anyone knows of any spots that does not require permits I would greatly appreciate it. Also I only fly old vintage Estes A-D engines, nothing high powered. Thanks

All of the State of California requires permission of the fire authority having jurisdiction as well as the landowner before you can legally launch Model Rockets. The only site where the Fire AHJ does not want to write written permits (for Model Rockets only) is at Lucerne Dry Lakebed. you can pretty much go out there anytime for Model Rockets.

As far as I know, anywhere else in the State requires a written permit.

We have a document on our website to help understand the process:

You should get ahold of the Starlord Commander for Life.
Last known address was a trailer park in Rosamond, CA that borders Edwards AFB.
Rules and Regulations don't apply to Starlord members---check the by-laws.
Its only been 40 years and they are still not finished drafting them.
Look for an old guy sharing a trailer with a few cats and a sidewalk telescope.

I was just thinking about Dennis the other night. He's one of the missing for quite some time now. I think the new Battlestar kinda blew his doors off.

Has anyone heard a peep from him in months? I don't think he has even posted on r.m.r. in a long, long time.

Good one!
Poke at the SciFi and the soliciting donations for auto repairs all at once!
One of these days I'm going to scan and post the STELLAR WINDS newsletter.
You better strengthen your core muscles as you might tear something when you see them.

They did have some great sci-fi artwork done by a fella from Texas.
Guy Brownlee I think his name was/is.
That RedRiverRocketry guy probably knows him.
( I have a wayback pic of him to show)
Most of the rest of the pages were reprints of material with no regard as to infringing on copyrights.
Had a scrap-booking look to it before scrap-booking became an industry.

He claimed the locals had given him a nick name. I can't recall it - all that comes to mind is Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap, but I don't think that's it http://forums.rocketshoppe.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Go to the local FD, ask the Captain where you can launch, pre-type a letter for him to sign. Done.

Do not take bad and simplistic advice as it will expose you to up to $1000 and/or 1 year in jail for each violation of the state fire regulations.

Different jurisdictions handle permitting in different ways. Most do not issue permits at the local fire station, but rather at their headquarters. And most have special officers designated to issue the permits, such as "Fire Inspectors". Again, a simplistic answer will simply help lead you to massive fines or worse.

And you still need the permission of the property owner.

Getting a permit and permission can be done in many locations, but not in all. it is much easier if you have insurance. It is virtually impossible if the area has severe drought and fire conditions, or if you cannot demonstrate how you will be launching safely (field size, diagram / layout, fire surpression - extinguishers, etc., power level to be launched, etc.).

If you have a clean record and can explain what you want to do clearly and cinfidently, you stand a good chance.

Lucerne Dry Lake bed is about 110 miles from where I live. So basically I could drive out there during the week and launch without a permit? What is the best time to go before the wind kicks up? Also I thought I read somewhere that Indio and Coachella were the only two places in California that don't require a permit, but I can't find that info. I understand why California is so strict in fire prone areas such as brush and forest. What I don't understand is that California does have a lot of open spaces not prone to fires, so why do we need a permit?

:chuckle:

I forgot about Starlord. I wonder whatever happened to him?

I'll see if I can search around and get him to join the forum. I'll look for other controversial characters from the rmr days like Tai Fu as well. :chuckle: (not)

You need a permit because Launching of model rockets anywhere in the State of California requires the permission of the property owner and of the local fire authority. This fire authority permission should be in the form of a written permit according to the latest directive of the California State Fire Marshal (mainly so you can PROVE that you really have permission from the correct authorizing officer/office and on weekends those offices are closed so a phone call will not help you prove to a police or fire officer that you are operating legally.).

I drive to Lucerne Dry Lake to launch (see SCRA Calendar of Events for schedule). We've called the fire authority for that area and they insist that they have designated that spot for Model Rocket launching and they do not want to issue written permits for Model Rocket launching. As a matter of fact, they direct folks from all over that County to go to Lucerne Dry Lake. If you are launching High Power Rockets it is another story and they do indeed require a permit (and if you need to comply with FAA regulations for High Power Rockets as required).

I called the San Bernardino County Fire department and they said the same thing. They said there are 2 locations in the County that are designated as launch sites and no permit is required for LPR. I forget where the 2nd location is. I better make a trip out there before it gets to hot. ;)

Was it Sidewalk Astronomer of Rosamond?Probably. But it's boring. It needs to be alliterative. Something like Roadside Rambler of Rosamond :D Not that that fits all that well, but it sounds better :)

I looked on the Old Rockets Yahoo group and noticed he quit posting in May 2007. He still has the Church of Eternity website where he'll say a prayer for you for $1.

I looked into this a little further. Evidentally he had a stroke sometime in 2007 and is in a nursing home now. At least that is what one board had posted on it.

OK, that explains why he has been offline for so long. I will assume he created his website with "threw" all over it sometime before he suffered the stroke.

What is the succession plan for the Starlords? Is there a "sub-commander"?
