Another new build for me,I love these fat, stout rockets. I was impressed with the strength of the parts and the through-the-wall fin slots leave some extra length unlike my Fat Boy. Like my Fat boy though,I simply used the fins as spacers when gluing the top ring on the motor tube for a perfect fit. I'm not too impressed with the one-sided fin decals but it's easy enough to just leave them off(or make four sets on a copier). Sure,ho-hum for a lot of guys here but I just did my first D flight this year! I haven't seen any E's up here yet though.

i built my Big Daddy back in the spring, and I enjoyed putting it together. For having such a massive body and stubby appearance, it went together very well. I also did not like the decals - my decals for both the fins and the Big Daddy logo tore before I got them on. It's not too noticeable, but still a pain.

I havent' launched it yet, but hopefully I can get out soon now that it is cooling off. If I do, I will take pics! Good luck on your launches!

I've flown mine on E9-4's and E9-6's, but I haven't yet tried it on a D. The E9's are great for this rocket. They seem to burn forever.

That's an awesome paint job, Mikus. Do the numbers on the fins have any significance?

The decals/stickers on my old Big Daddy were starting to look shabby and peal off so I took them all the way off, sanded it and am now just waiting for some nice weather this weekend to repaint it.

I just got a set of these from Phred at Excelcior.

Just click on "Excelcior Originals". for a set.

BTW this isn't mine...it's just a pic from Phred's web site of a model by Alan Extenson

Alan is the president of my club. I have seen that Big Daddy at a club launch, and it really looks sharp in person.

Alan has an entire DRM family (with the Big Daddy in the middle)....

Thank you. Yes indeed they do. They are stenciled on to look like the bird is part of the band's equipment. :D

"5150 is the seventh album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released in 1986. This was the first album recorded with new lead singer Sammy Hagar, who replaced David Lee Roth.

It was named after Eddie Van Halen's home studio, 5150, which is a California police term for a mentally disturbed person (a reference to Section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code). The 5150 name has been used several times by Van Halen. It is the name of Eddie Van Halen's private studio, the name of a custom Frankenstein striped Kramer Pacer Special used by Eddie Van Halen throughout the 80s, and it is the model name of a signature guitar amplifier endorsed by Eddie for Peavey Electronics."

5150 in my book was the album that signified the END of Van Halen.
Van Halen without David Lee Roth was as good as Black Sabbath without Ozzy Ozbourne or Judas Priest without Rob Halford (they all did or would STINK without their front-man).
While I liked Sammy Hagar on his own during his pre-VH days, I thought Van-Hagar STUNK.

Heh I thought you were going with the next one. I remember kids getting in trouble at school for wearing the "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" tour T-shirts. :D

Hint: If you don't get the joke, look at the capitalized letters

And I'll take ANY Van Hagar over Van Cherone. "How Many Say I"... nuff said.

True story, I'm at the Van Cherone concert in the Woodlands. Midway thru the concert the crowd starts chanting, "Sammy, Sammy, Sammy!" :chuckle:

And FWIW, even a DLR fan that went to the Sam & Dave show with me had to admit that Sammy spanked Dave's hiney mightly.

And DON'T get me started on Van Wolfgang....

Now... back to Big Daddys?

Yeah, well, by then I had stopped paying attention... Not that I was ever much of a fan, anyway. They came around some two decades too late for me.

Like I previously said, I considered VanHalen to be dead as a group (after the album "1984") once David Lee Roth left the band.
He at least had a couple of decent songs on his own like Yankee Rose and Tobacco Road.
As VanHagar and any of the later iterations even after that they just plain STUNK !

Ah ya gotta love the Internet, where everybody thinks they're somebody important.

I shudder to break this to you but most of us don't really care what music you do or don't like.

Now can we drop the hate and get back to discussing model rocketry? Somehow I'm doubting it. :(

DLR....
He was a great frontman at one time. But, his showmanship revolved around athletic moves and pure 100% cloned banter that came straight from Jim Dandy of Black Oak Arkansas. I mean absolutely 100% CLONED!

His singing was average at best, but he could scream on key in early days. When I saw him post VH, he had gotten to where he couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. He more or less spoke the words instead of singing. (This makes me believe EVH when he said that they had to punch in song vocals line by line to get a full song on key in the later albums.) Haven't seen him recently, but he seems to be nutty as a fruitcake now from what I've read and seen on TV.

Sammy...
Was and still is a good frontman, solo or in a band.
Can sing well and still can hit most of the high notes without a falsetto scream. Not a bad musician either.

I liked the old DLR. I still like Sammy. I like some of the songs from both eras, but not all. Never heard any of the Cherone songs.

I'm not a Big Daddy fan, but I loved looking at good images of Eddie's original Frankenstein guitar and his 5150, though I think the original had a lot more character. Therefore, I like the Big Daddy's paint job. I also liked the guitar sound on the first album much better than later albums. The "dirty brown sound" isn't the same as it used to be.

So, has your Big Daddy 5150 wailed yet on a power chord like E^28 or E^30? :D

I was thinking this would look much better with a bit of a stretch and I just found this section of tube today, about 2.6" long. I'll have to show you guys the Mother of All Finishes too, nobody upstages my thread! BTW,in '78 my buddy and I listened to Van Halen 1 all the time in Quadrphonic sound and in various altered states,it's one of my favourite albums. Little Dreamer and Ice Cream Man were the best tracks.

Neat, Rustee. It makes Big Daddy look sort of, um, enhanced, if you know what I mean... ;) Maybe you should call him "Bob." :p

Great! But here's one finish (http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2008/10/08/pfizer-fires-at-unauthorized-viagra-pr-missile-in-court/) that you shouldn't attempt to emulate. (Please!)
