Hi there:

I need to make two paper shrouds (adapters) for a project I'm working on.

They both need to connect BT 70 to BT 80 (2.217 inch to 2.60 inch)

The first needs to be .775 inches long, and the 2nd is .402 inches

Is there an easy way to figure out paper shroud shapes for these transitions?

(bonus points if you can tell me what scale model I'm working on here)

Thanks,
Hutch

Go to this link.....

Scroll down till you get to the Paper Shroud/Transition program.

There is a good transition/shroud tool here.

wow, 8 minutes to a great answer!

Have I said how much I love this place?

Sadly, I am a Mac user, and cannot run a .exe program. Curses!

However, I see there is Transition Template maker by Steve Humphry on the same page. Yay!

But, it gives me an error: "Visual Basic macros do not work in MS Office 2008 for Mac". Curse you microsoft!

Am I doomed?

We have a winner!

tonypv, I have now printed my patterns. You are a genius!

(barone, you would be a genius if only you could tell by my typing that I'm on a macintosh)

Anyone want to guess the project?

Hutch

Here's another online transition generator to add to your bookmarks- http://www.delorie.com/rockets/transitions.html

FWIW, here's a paper I wrote up on this a few years ago. It may help some to better understand the math involved.

If you gave up your mac and had a PC you would not have this problem. So is it microsoft or mac who is the problem?

Definitely Microsoft. (Come on, that's a question that answers itself. ;) )

Hutch, are using an Intel-based Mac?

ha ha moonzero2 - yes, if I had a PC, I would not have this problem - I would have 100 different problems though!

No, I'm using an ancient Imac 500 MHz, that does pretty much everything i need it to.

but now I have my paper shrouds, and am a happy man.

Well I wouldn't say I was a genius, but thanks. ;)

Glad I could help.

Ubuntu Linux 8.04 "Hardy Heron" on my new system... Core2 Quad 2.4, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive. It's not without blemishes, but it kicks butt.

And I can run Windows apps if I really need to.

On topic: I have a centering ring generator on my website, but I haven't yet written a transition generator.

I now also need some help making a special shroud. What I am trying to do is angle the large diameter end of a shroud.

Does anybody know how to use this program:

http://shumphrey.home.att.net/interests/rocketry/transitions/

or can tell me how to do this with one of the other shroud making programs.

I am attaching a diagram of what I am trying to accomplish.

thanks in advance

Terry,

You can probably do it with Steve's program but how I wouldn't know. But, me trying to keep things simple....I would just make the shroud and then cut the angle with a hobby saw (after stiffening the paper).

ok, NEVERMIND. After soem further experimenattion with the program, I finaly figured out how to get that diagonal angle at the big end.

as an examplee, the min body tube was .736 and the large diameter tube end was 1.325 and the offset was 2.5 and that gives me what I want.

Still haven;t figured out how to use the start and end angles yet.

Terry,

Give us some more info. What are the diameters at each end? What is the angle at the large end?

doug:

I more or less figured out how to use Stev'es program. I was using .736" as the small dia and 1.325 as the large end dia. I then used 2.5 as the offset which gives me a pretty good diagonal cut off the large end.

Your shrouds would not be for a Delta 2 model would they? If so, please let me know!
