View Full Version : Some forgotten Shrox kits

This was one of the pages on the Shrox site years ago that showed some potential new offerings. (I copied it before it disappeared.) The Icarus eventually did come out, but I think the rest never materialized. I always liked the looks of the Federation in particular. Maybe they're now in Estes future?

Don't forget the Sarah Conner.

Here's my version. I call it the John Conner.

No decals yet. Just haven't figured that part out yet.

I think it's gonna need a lot of nose weight.

It looks like I entered the ranks of the BARs too late. These remind me of the kits I wanted as a kid but could never find or afford. :(

Is there a source for buying any of these Shrox kits? :D

Looks like Estes will be making the Icarus available as the Daedalus, but I'm not sure as far as any of the others. I think Flis Kits still kits the Alien 8 and Apogee does the Snarky.
I just pulled out Alien 8 #37 tonight to finally start it. :o

Thanks, I ahve those 2 in the build pile. I was just hoping against hope that somebody would read the message and say, "gee, old whatchmacallit hobbies down the street has all those things and the old man is too stubbor to use the net...you could probably get them by calling 555-1212...."

Its a forlorn hope but hopes die hard.

Thanks again.

PS I didn't know the Snarky was a Shrox kit. It was the first I ever ordered from Apogee.

Apogee also does the Orion and the Stonebreaker, which are Shrox designs. I've really liked the Orion ever since I first saw it as a freely downloadable design in the Apogee newsletter.

Yeah, I forgot about the newsletter downloads. I've got a CD with a bunch of those that someone printed off for me. There were some pretty cool plans on there. I think Chan Stevens built and reviewed them all for EMRR. I was there when he flew the Shrox Shuttle. IIRC, it came in VERY HOT!
Man, that was a long time ago. :(
And now that I'm thinking about it, Shrox gave everyone a free plan as a Christmas gift one year. I'm not sure which plan it was, but I think I saved it on my home computer.

Don't give up hope on finding the Hyperion. I've had several rockets reappear since my move, all of which I'd given up hope on. I also had a bunch reappear in 2001 after being lost since 1994/95, one of which was an Estes Little Joe. (I almost typed "Little Hoe".) Needless to say, I was quite happy to see that bird again.

Folks, I haven't located the specific post yet, but several months ago, Shrox poked his head in and asked that his designs not be posted or shared, as he had plans for them. I do believe this excludes his "published plans" (for example, those plans in the Apogee Newsletters).

Anything like the Star Shuttle, Alien8, and so on (that were kitted up and available for sale at one time or another) would seem to be off limits based on his request. I don't think there's anything preventing anyone from taking the time (as EchoVictor and Sandman did) to analyze the available Shrox artwork and make their own "interpretations" of his Shrockets, but a straight "parts list and plans" approach that we know and love for cloning the older Estes/Centuri designs would be a no-no.

I love Shrox's designs as much as the rest of us, and I think we should respect his wishes. That having been said, I'm drooling for the next chance to pickup any of his kits, as they're fun builds (and have that "cool" factor that we all dig). :)

Just my two cents.

The plan book was suggested to Doug on multiple occasions in the past. Something like what Peter Alway did with Scale Bash, which I've always found an incredibly entertaining piece of work. So far, nothing has been able to shake anything loose except the occasional picture. :(

I sat in on a Shrox session on model rocket design at a NARCON years ago hoping he was going to give us some insight on how he comes up with his ideas or how he designs for stability. Unfortunately for me, it turned out to be an intro to Rocksim.

As I recall, he used lots of TLAR in his presentation. Rocksim was nowhere near capable then of sim'ing all the asymmetric stuff he would put into his birds, so he said he would draw them up (can't recall which drawing tool he used) and then stretch them here or there if he thought that would improve stability. Keep in mind, at that time, I think he had just gone to work at Apogee, so no doubt he had access to Rocksim :) But most of his rockets have struck me as being anything but 3FNC in the context of simulating.

For anyone wanting to build a Shrox style rocket (Shrocket), stop by your sporting goods store and get a pack of ping pong balls, then head to Fry's for some blank CD's :) (In the old days, you coulda used AOL CD's ;)) Then sit at your bench dreaming up ways of sliding that ping pong ball over a BT-50. Not sure what glue works best with CD's, tho :)

I'm pretty sure this hasn't been seen on here. It was built by a club friend Geoffrey K, a.k.a. Maniac BAR. The SHX Ripley was an amazing build. It flew on an F something. It went unstable but sure looked good on the way there. It has been repaired and do not know if it will fly again.

This thread got me thinking about my SHROX kits I had. So I spent the rainy day today looking for his kits. I bought all of these kit from him before he worked for Estes, Quest or Apogee. Here are the kits I have.

Hyperion
Stiletto

SHX-15
SHX Rammstein

I had the original SHROX-built prototype model of the SHX-3.
The as-designed rear ejection model suffered a no-deploy
and lawndarted.
I salvaged the wings and decals and built another model with standard pop the cone deployment and flew it at the NARAM that was held at the Cow-atorium.
Very stable on an E9.

I always wanted the SHX-3 but neve got one. Have know idea how many were made or sold . You talk about rear ejection the only rear ejection model I built was SHX Rammstein. It worked well. The SHX Rammstein main body tube was a BT-70. It was a nice size rocket. I would like to build another one along with his Fox Fire and LexxJet .

I saw a design drawing of his Delta wing SHX-15. That was another one I always hope he would have made a kit of.

Chris, was the SHX-3 main body tube a BT-70 with a BT-60 rear tube and engine mounted in it? What was the full length of the SHX-3?

Overall length 37"

The SHX-3 never made it past the prototype phase.

Shrox asked me at one time to build him one but then he dissapeared again and never answered me back.

Estes had purchased the rights to around 8 of his designs back in Oct 2006. (I was at the meeting) But, as we know, never produced.
RDWhat was the rough scale of money involved? How many zeros?

I should also add the following two rockets that were not in the list above:

SHX Aerospace One (Quest)

and rename the following:

Here you go...

It's a PDF file I've had for a while. He also did a Delta-winged version I think.

I have to go look in my shop! The only reason I never really pursued building them was that I needed to have legal-sized cardstock for the wraps, so I never looked that hard for it.

Shrox came and went during my most recent hiatus from the hobby, so I never got a chance to try out any of his kits. If any of you have one or two collecting dust in your basement that you'd be willing to sell, please drop me a PM

Thanks.

Long ago, Doug posted some Lightwave 3D renderings of Shrockets-
http://www.rocketryforumarchive.com/showthread.php?t=47291&highlight=lightwave
Since the TRA Archive links to shrox.com (which could vaporize anytime), I'll also post the files here for posterity.

You'll need the K3D viewer to read the .lwo files - http://www.kevs3d.co.uk/k3d2.html

As noted in the TRA Archive, the Ripley-docked file has some 'junk' attached to the tail end of the rocket.

Enjoy!

And to provide a taste of the .lwo files, here's some screenshots from the K3D viewer.

Thanks Brian. Great finds!

Anyone know if these are, in fact, Shrox designs?

Planet Probe (Quest) ?
MLAS (Quest) ?

That is a good question. Not in the normal "Shrox" style. My guess is No. He may have worked on the production (graphics, packaging...blah blah blah) but not the design. But that said, Bill Stein should weigh in.

Given the MLAS is a (semi) scale model of a real article, I'd say no...

Planet Probe? Doubtful. As someone noted, not really Doug's style.

I've got one you've probably never seen before. The elusive Shrox saucer. Behold the Europa Probe!

I sorta built one of these-- flew very nicely.
