A friend of mine works for a school district, where they were throwing out the old junk, and he scored these for me:

One of the pads needed some repair (you really aren't supposed to pull the rod-holder out of the base after installation) and one rocket still needs a fin put back on. I'll probably give the rockets away (not a fan of ready-to-fly rockets). Handy to have a couple of extra pads though.

My friend has no idea what happened to the controllers. Bummer, that.

Missing Estes controllers are a good excuse to buy Quest controllers with the "EBC".

What's an EBC? Is that the controller that has the nine volt battery and audible alarm? Best thing that Quest ever produced, hands down.

Missing Estes controllers are also a good excuse to roll my own again...

Yes, Quest's controllers are good, but the wires are very thin. One of the wires near the microclips nearly burned right off. I keep mine handy as a backup; for the most part, I usually use the QuickBurst NOVA launch controller.

EBC is External Battery Connector. It is a $2.95 part sold by Quest to connect the 9 volt connector inside the controller to a larger battery. Connector on one end, good swires in the middle and battery clips on the other end. They recommend a 6 volt alkaline lantern battery but you can use larger batteries (as long as you are not foolish and have the clips in a dead short against each other while using a car battery - which is a "wire insulation melting test").

EBC is included with complete class program packs.

... so I show up at the same school today, and my friend hands me a bag containing an RTF rocket (Estes "NSA Starship," flown at least once, parachute melty but rocket fine), an Estes launch stand and controller, and a box of A8-3 engines, partially used. Turns out, someone messed with the contents of the box, because I found fifteen A8-3's and one B6-4. Some of the igniters have been mangled (students, no doubt) but there are two baggies of six each that are unmolested, along with a few loose ones that appear good. Oh, and more than half the original wad of flame retardant toilet paper.

... hmm. FRTP. That'd make a useful acronym in many places, far beyond YORF...
