Hi,
My name is Dan Grevelund. I am living in Denmark, Scandinavia. Last year I succeeded in getting aprovement of model rockets for sale in Denmark by the Danish authorities. Before 2013 this was not allowed. The license is only for small Estes rockets and engines. But it is a start. Accordingly, I am rather new to model rocketry and this great hobby is just starting in my country. I'm selling model rockets in Denmark through my shop WILDTOYS (http://www.wildtoys.dk/shop/undervisning-18c1.html) . The basic business idea of WILDTOYS is to provide outdoor toys that dad also likes to play with. This means toys that have the power to get dad out of the couch and make him turn off his mobile or PC. And model rockets certainly belong in this category! Besides WILDTOYS I have been running the strategy consulting company Vaekststrategi.dk (Growth Strategy (http://vaekststrategi.dk/konsulentbistand/) ) for many years.

In this forum I hope to increase my knowledge about model rockets in general. I'm always looking for new products. So if any of you have ideas for new products (in rocketry or other outdoor toys that can drive dad out of the sofa) please feel free to contact me. As a person I like to help other people if I can. So please contact me if you think I can contribute or be of assistance.

Best regards

Welcome Dan and congrats on getting the authorities in your country to approve the import and sale of rocketry products there!

I think many of us 'stateside' here often take for granted what we are able to purchase rocketry-wise and forget those same opportunities do not always exist in other countries.

Thanks for joining us here and let us know if there is anything WE can do to help you!

Best Regards,

Dan:

A big thumbs up for introducing rocketry to Denmark!

In regards to model rocket products:

A parts assortment, packaged with a simple design guide, would be a good fit for the mission. Designing things together is more interesting than "merely" building a kit.

The design guide could contain a "program" of increasingly complex rocket plans / techniques. Staging, clustering, gliders, etcetera. Building a launch pad and launch panel is a good DIY electronics project.

Beyond rocketry:

Are you aware of MAKE magazine, and Maker Shed?

Here are the photos I took at last year's Maker Faire:

Dan-

What are the largest Estes motors you can obtain in Denmark now? Do they allow all the way up to the Estes F class motors?

Just curious....

Dear All,
Thank you for good comments and support. It is really good to feel the positive attitude here. In Denmark I often meet sceptic people telling me about all the risks and limitations instead of seeing the possibilties.

Thanks for the tip about the Make Magazine. It looks interesting.

I have permission to sell up to D-motors. My feeling is that the authorities will monitor how this goes before permission is given for more powerful engines. So security is a top priority for me.

Best regards from Denmark

You can do a lot with just up to D motors!

Many "recreational" flyers only buy rockets and motors from discount stores, and only know about A - C motors and very simple kits.

The real key to making rocketry an engaging hobby isn't size, but availability of parts, plans, and information about advanced techniques.

Estes has plenty of free-via-PDF technical reports and lesson plans.

This is an exciting time for you. It will take time for attitudes to change but they will change. There will be a great deal to do since you are at step 1 but you're on the right track to try and establish insurance. It would be easier if you can establish a national organization like NAR or UKRA, perhaps either or both could offer assistance with getting started. I asked Verna if she knew approximately how many people there are currently flying but she said you had not mentioned a number.

It will be very hard to do it all on your own but not impossible. Are any of the business men you spoke of willing to help you? The more help you have the faster you'll be viable.

And you have probably already thought about it (or have even done it), but some public demo launches are a great way to let people see the hobby in action first hand......enthusiasts may come out of the woodwork. At least , hopefully so!

Welcome, Dan! You'll find a wealth of information here, exceeded only by the friendliness of the members.
As for motors, I enjoy flying my Cherokee D, Cobra upscale and Defender on D engines more than any other size. You should get a lot of enjoyment out of these engines, and I hope you introduce this pleasure to many people!

If there is not a weight/Newton limit, clustering can make some nice midpower fire & smoke. They may not even have regs as we are used to seeing. Something else to check on. Just hope they don't lump them in with fireworks.
