The Atlas-V/Centaur mission launched successfully this afternoon from Canaveral. As of this post, we are about 30 minutes from the third burn of the Centaur...

Third burn was a success. MUOS now has an elliptical orbit of 19,323 x 1,869 nautical miles and an inclination of 19 degrees.

Saw the launch on ULA's website... pretty neat coverage... saw the second burn of the Centaur-- they showed an DOD film about MUOS in the 20 minute intermission between the first and second burn, and interviewed a Navy guy...

Pretty cool stuff...

The launch was really nice... being so close to sundown, once the rocket was halfway across the Atlantic, it was already over darkness on the ground and finally flew into Earth's shadow, which gave a really neat "sunset" behind the Centaur when it still had about a minute to go on it's first burn... VERY cool!

So the thing will put itself into GEO then?? Still got about 3,000 miles to go to raise its orbit from 19,000 to 22,300...

Later! OL JR :)
